A handy short cut clcycling to Manchester from Chester is to charge through the roller-coaster road of Delamere Forest – admiring the squirrels and deep dark arboreal recesses, then to Dunham Massey deer park. The shortest route is through Little Bollington which glories in a large public house with the odd name of Swan with Two Nicks. Doan past that and to the RIver Bollin. A narrow footbridge takes you accross to Dunham Massey Deer Park. What were they thinking? The average obese Briton would have to call out the firebrigade to get them unstuck!
The first time I travelled over it my two panniers bulged with chattels being taken to daughter’s house in Manchester and it got jammed! I had to remove the panniers and leave my bike at one end.
Last year Joanna Lumley stood in the middle with a friend admiring the waters of the River Bollin and seeing the waters gurgle under the bridge to the Mill. She had waved me over and we enjoyed small talk on cycling and rivers.
The photo is from yesterday. I had already emptied panner in Manchester so it was easier even so you can’t cycle your bike across without risking falling against the railing and over into the river, so you have to steer the bike from the back. If you’ve tried this you know that the handlebars and fromt wheel grab the opportunity to seek liberation and do their own trip. ho hum.
Note there’s something strange about the yellow no parking lines…
Always handy to be able to pop into the Swan with two Nicks. Have a beer or a cup of tea to hydrate the weary cyclist.
